Peter Mitterhofer Typewriter Museum
The evolution of the typewriter ranks among the most fascinating chapters in the history of technology. Without this instrument, it would be impossible to imagine our economic, cultural and private lives. The museum’s collection comprises over 1,400 examples, dating from 1864 to 1980, displayed across the museum’s four floors. Particular emphasis is placed on the prototypes of the inventor Peter Mitterhofer from Parcines, to whom the Municipality of Parcines has dedicated this museum.
The Peter Mitterhofer Typewriter Museum in Parcines is the pilot museum of ITAT2049|SMART – Small Museums Alliance Representing Territories, which, under the coordination of ‘South Tyrol for All’, has implemented various innovative measures to ensure a truly barrier-free cultural experience:
New digital guide for everyone
The museum’s conventional audio guide has been replaced by a fully accessible digital guide, in which all content is created according to the multisensory principle:
- readable as accessible digital text in the three languages German, Italian and English;
- readable with a screen reader (for people with visual impairments);
- audible via professional audio dubbing; and
- viewable in sign language (video clips in LIS and ÖGS for people with hearing impairments).
The technology used enables a barrier-free guided tour of the museum on site using your own mobile phone, or from home on a PC thanks to a virtual tour of the Typewriter Museum.

Accessible virtual reality film
In addition to the museum guide, independent L. has commissioned an immersive 3D film about Peter Mitterhofer’s typewriter prototypes. The international production involved the Peter Mitterhofer Typewriter Museum in Parcines, the Palais Mamming Museum in Merano, the Technical Collections in Dresden, and, in collaboration with the Vienna Technical Museum. The film’s technical features make it accessible to a wide audience:
- trilingual (German, Italian and English);
- with subtitles;
- with translation into the two sign languages ÖGS and LIS (German and Italian).

Rating: High accessibility
The museum does not have its own car park, but there is a parking area in the nearby square in front of the building, with one space reserved for disabled visitors. The main entrance to the museum has steps; therefore, wheelchair users can access the building via the rear entrance (there is a bell on the left-hand wall to call for assistance). The museum tour begins on the ground floor, where there is a 66 cm narrow passage (which can be avoided). A spacious lift (150x150 cm) connects all floors of the building except for the mezzanine on the 3rd floor, which is accessible via a spiral staircase. The accessible toilet is located on level -1 (without grab rails).

Note: The car park also has a parking space reserved for disabled people, but it is less convenient as you have to cross a junction without a pedestrian crossing.

Note: The archive is open to visitors and accessible by lift, but has limited space to manoeuvre and narrow passages measuring 66 cm. Here we find a large number of typewriters, in particular numerous post-war models dating from the 1950s. The archive thus serves to complement the chronology presented in the exhibitions on the upper floors.
