GIRL. WOMAN. OTHER.

Iconic Women's Portraits from Matisse to Alex Katz

The summer exhibition 2026 at the Kunsthaus Gmünd is dedicated to the representation of women in art of the 20th and 21st centuries. It will showcase images of women from the classical modern era to today: Henri Matisse's dancers meet Picasso's muses and the luminous portraits of Alex Katz, complemented by powerful works from contemporary artists. The exhibition "Girl. Woman. Other." unfolds a polyphonic panorama of female role models – from mother figure and icon to the courageous fighter and unwavering everyday heroine. The Kunsthaus Gmünd presents another exhibition that brings together international masterpieces with current artistic perspectives in an impressive dialogue. An exhibition where art and life meet.

With the summer exhibition "Girl. Woman. Other. Iconic Women's Portraits from Matisse to Alex Katz," the Kunsthaus Gmünd celebrates women and devotes itself to one of the central themes of art history. A multifaceted and high-caliber selection of prints and selected sculptures will be displayed, making visible the portrayals of women of the 20th and 21st centuries in all their facets.

At the heart of the exhibition are the big names of modernity and the present: Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Louise Bourgeois, Alex Katz, and Julian Opie are prominent focal points. Matisse's famous dancers, in reduced form and flowing movement, symbolize freedom, rhythm, and joy of life. Picasso's graphic works revolve around muse and lover – images oscillating between admiration, projection, and artistic appropriation. Louise Bourgeois is represented with striking etchings that tell stories of mother figures and spiders, speaking of protection, memory, and vulnerability. With Alex Katz and Julian Opie, the focus shifts to the present: Their works depict women as self-confident, timeless figures straddling the lines of everyday life, iconization, and contemporary imagery.

“Girl. Woman. Other.” is an invitation to look closely – to marvel, compare, and rethink. The exhibition shows how diverse, contradictory, and powerful representations of women can be in art and simultaneously builds a bridge between international art history and contemporary artistic practice.

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive framework and educational program with lectures, film and literary matinees, and offerings for families and school classes. A free children's companion booklet also excites a young audience for the exhibition.
