South Tyrol Mining Museum: Steinhaus grain store
Copper was mined in Prettau, in the upper Ahrntal valley, for 500 years. The mine’s administrative centre was located in the village of Steinhaus. The Kornkasten there – the mine’s former food store – now houses the Steinhaus Regional Mining Museum. The exhibition focuses on the extensive collection of the Enzenberg family. Wooden models of furnishings, paintings and artistically decorated mine maps, as well as books, documents and artefacts from the mine, bring the history of mining in the Ahrntal valley to life.
Rating: Very high accessibility
From the designated visitor car park on the main road, the entrance area can be reached on foot via a flight of stairs or, alternatively, via a fairly steep access ramp. To do this, you must cross the main road. Visitors with a disabled parking permit can park in the immediate vicinity of the main entrance. All three exhibition areas in the building are accessible without steps and are connected by a lift (145x135 cm with a door width of 90 cm). There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor.

Note: The second floor houses the exhibition areas ‘Copper Flows’ and ‘The Virtual Cabinet of Curiosities’. The mining models on display were originally housed in the model chamber at the Gassegg estate. When the museum was founded, all the objects were moved to the Kornkasten. However, the original model chamber is still accessible to museum visitors in virtual form, as a dedicated computer area, the so-called “Virtual Cabinet of Curiosities”, allows visitors to take the models off the shelf with a click of the mouse, rotate them and view animations of how they work.
