Independent L. is a non-profit social cooperative based in Merano, South Tyrol. Since 1997, we have been working as a counselling centre for people with disabilities and have become a province-wide centre of excellence in the areas of accessibility, smart home and assistive technology.
In order to drive innovation in these technological areas, we have carried out a whole series of EU projects (ESF, ERDF, Interreg, NextGeneration-EU) in recent years.
Since 2024, we have also been running the tourism portal “Alto Adige per tutti” – Accessible Tourism in South Tyrol. This specialised information platform reviews the accessibility of facilities throughout South Tyrol and promotes selected offers for seniors, families with prams and guests with disabilities. The project is recognised as best practice at EU level and is exemplary in PLACES for the jointly planned inclusive model region for all.
In addition to architectural accessibility (removal of physical barriers), our experts also advise on digital accessibility (removal of barriers to using computers/the internet).

- the implementation of an augmented reality feature to enrich the contents and accessibility of the Customs Museum;
- the mapping of accessibility of accommodation, restaurants and points of interest across the area, to be included in the destination portal with clear accessibility information.

The kärnten.museum is a place of learning, dialogue, encounters, but also of confrontation and critical reflection. As the Carinthian State Museum since 1884, it has been one of Klagenfurt's most beautiful historicist buildings; and since 2022, as the kärnten.museum Klagenfurt, it has been one of Austria's most modern museums. For the kärnten.museum, unrestricted access for every visitor is essential to enable people with diverse circumstances and needs to participate equally and independently in cultural life.
It is not only a question of for whom and for which needs the offerings are developed, but also of which realities of life are represented. This guiding principle drives projects such as the PLACES Interreg Project, which enables us to further improve accessibility for people with visual impairments. Through four targeted measures, the contents of the kärnten.museum will in future also be independently accessible to blind and severely visually impaired visitors:
- App for blind and visually impaired people for indoor navigation
- Tactile floor guidance system
- 3D-printed models as tactile objects
- Multi-sensory brochure
