In the heart of South Tyrol, overlooking the Rosengarten in the Dolomites, stands the Museion – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolzano. Since 2008, the museum has been housed in a futuristic building characterised by openness and transparency. The light-filled building was designed by the Berlin-based architectural firm KSV. Thanks to a bold exhibition programme with an international focus, which has brought the most expressive works from the current art scene to South Tyrol – often as Italian premieres – the Museion ranks among the most important museums of contemporary art in Italy and the Alpine region. The collection comprises more than 4,500 works and is displayed – often in dialogue with other public and private collections – on a rotating basis and with a thematic focus. The collection reflects the museum’s exhibition history. Key areas of the collection include – amongst others – art and language, the formal language of sculpture, a critical examination of the present, and works by non-European artists. A meeting place and a covered piazza. Bringing contemporary art closer to the public: this is the mission the Museion has set itself, which is why, in addition to its exhibition activities, the museum offers a diverse programme of educational and public engagement events. During the summer months, the media façade illuminates the surrounding urban landscape with impressive artist videos. The ground-floor space is open to external organisers, making the Museion a hub for contemporary culture, including music, dance and performances.
Rating: Very high accessibility
The Museion is within easy walking distance of the railway station and Waltherplatz (multi-storey car park offering a 25% discount for visitors for 4 hours’ parking). Visitors with a disabled parking permit can also reach the museum grounds via Rosministraße and may park their car in reserved spaces not far from the entrance area. An additional reserved parking space is located on the corner of Wendelsteinstraße. The Museion has six floors, which are connected by a spacious lift (210 x 110 cm). The adjacent studio building is also accessible, whilst the access path to the separate ‘Garage’ exhibition (Rosministraße 29) has a 13 cm high step. There are three accessible toilets in the main building (ground floor, first floor and second floor).
Note: The best way to reach the Museion is on foot from the railway station or Walterplatz. Visitors who park in the Waltherplatz car park will receive a discount of approximately 25% on the first four hours of parking upon presentation of their parking ticket at the Museion ticket office. There are also excellent bus connections to Dominikanerplatz, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the Museion. Visitors with reduced mobility (disabled parking permit) can access the museum grounds via Rosministraße and may park their car in reserved spaces not far from the entrance area. An additional car park for visitors with disabilities is located on the corner of Wendelsteinstraße.
