Hike to Angerer Alm Alpine Hut
This scenic nature hike in Oberolang ascends the Brunstbach valley within the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, reaching the pastures and panoramic terrace of Angerer Alm with magnificent views of the Dolomites. Although it runs partly on asphalt and mostly on a forest road, the trail features steep mountain inclines and technical passages over uneven terrain, loose rocks, and unstable gravel. The first stretch, up to the equipped picnic and barbecue area, is accessible for wheelchair users with an electric handbike/attachment. From the barbecue area to the alpine hut, the path is not wheelchair accessible. For families with young children, it requires an all-terrain hiking stroller with large, shock-absorbing wheels and a handbrake.
Reachability
By car: After passing the Kinderwelt playground parking area (Kids World), continue along the paved road to reach a second signposted parking area (transverse slope and ballast surface).
By public transport: CallBus Valdaora (on-demand bus service with the last stop located after Kinderwelt).
Description
Picnic and Barbecue Area
The route starts at the unpaved parking lot and the CallBus stop located after Kinderwelt (Kids World). Heading up the paved road on a steady climb with a regular incline of around 10%, you pass fenced meadows and the Brunstbach streamlet on your left. After crossing a pasture grate on the ground for grazing animals, continue straight on asphalt following the "stroller friendly" sign: after about 100 meters you will reach a drinking fountain, where the asphalt temporarily gives way to compact gravel. Crossing a small wooden bridge, the path returns to asphalt with a gentler gradient (6–7%), reaching a large picnic and barbecue area equipped with inviting gazebos, wooden tables and benches, a playground, a grill zone, a drinking fountain, and a public dry toilet (wooden cabin with reduced accessibility).
Uphill Stretch through the Forest along the Brunstbach Streamlet
From the picnic area onwards, the trail becomes more demanding: the asphalt ends again and the forest road climbs steeply (10–12%) through the woods on uneven ground with gravel and loose stones, alongside the small cascades of the streamlet with views of the Dolomites. Past a private hut, you walk along a short, steep paved section featuring cross-drainage channels. After crossing a wooden bridge, the ground turns back to uneven dirt and gravel with inclines reaching up to 14% on loose stones. You then tackle a very steep 18–20% ramp, at the end of which you cross another small wooden bridge, continuing straight along the forest road on a pronounced, steady incline (16–18%). About 100–150 meters before a wide sharp bend, the road returns to asphalt, tackling a climb with peaks exceeding 20%.
The Hiking Trail
Upon reaching a junction, leave the main road to turn right onto the Panorama Route (Trail 22). After a sharp hairpin turn and a small bridge, climb up through the sunny forest at a 16% incline on a loose, slippery dirt road (loose rocks and fine sand). Reaching a wooden bench, the ascent continues relentless with severe ramps between 18% and 20%. Emerging from the woods onto the panoramic ridge with views over the valley, the incline temporarily eases to 6–8% on more compact dirt. Upon reaching the nearby junction for the alpine hut, you come across the most challenging point of the route: a very short downhill ramp of about 20 meters over unstable gravel and loose rocks, with gradients reaching 30% that require maximum care.
Arrival at Angerer Alm
After the steep descent, the last 300–500 meters continue on a mild incline until reaching Angerer Alm (1,424 m). The alpine hut offers a beautiful panoramic view, a spacious outdoor dining area set up on a wooden terrace with tables, umbrellas, and a children's play area in the surrounding meadow. Inside the hut, there is a small room with 3 tables.
