Achmühle Nature Trail
The Achmühle circular hike in Mitterolang combines nature and local history into a pleasant itinerary through fields, woods, and along the stream. Although it develops mostly on paved roads and pedestrian paths, the route features prolonged downhill sections, short stretches with steep gradients, and a gentle yet steady final climb. For this reason, the trail is well-suited for families with children and strollers; however, for wheelchair users, it is strongly recommended to use an electric pulling device or a power wheelchair, as manual pushing would otherwise be very strenuous.
Reachability
By car: From Brunico, take the SS49 main road to Valdaora, then continue to the village center of Mitterolang up to Bar Krempe.
By public transport: Citybus lines 435.1 and 435.2 (bus stop Mitterolang / Krempe) or CallBus service (bus stop Bar Krempe).
Description
This 2.8 km circular trail starts at Bar Krempe in Valdaora di Mezzo / Mitterolang (bus stop and CallBus service | parking lot with a reserved space for visitors with disabilities).
From the parking lot, a short 10% ramp leads to the pedestrian crossing. After crossing the street near the bus stop, continue along the sidewalk at a steady, gentle incline past the Raiffeisen building (100 cm bottleneck). At the junction, cross the road and follow the cobblestone sidewalk to the left. In front of the Agstner shop, there is a steep stretch with a 12% gradient for about 15 meters, followed by a descent reconnecting to road level. The sidewalk then continues at a gentle, steady incline.
Achmühle Area and Alternative Route
Near Pizzeria Friedheim, cross the street and walk alongside the golf course (where a parking area and a bus stop are located). Before the climb near the "Prugger" bend, turn left onto the dirt path with a 16% gradient leading to the small wooden bridge over the Brunsbach stream, followed by another short sloped section on packed dirt and gravel.
Alternative route note: The dirt path can be avoided by continuing on the paved sidewalk along via Hans von Perthaler up to the Valdaora di Sopra / Oberolang bridge, reconnecting to the itinerary by walking down via Erschbaum (approx. 750 m total detour, 400 m of which is uphill).
Wooded Descent and Return Climb
From via Erschbaum, the route continues downhill on asphalt (5–7% slope). After the railway underpass, the road enters the woods, where the descent becomes longer and steeper, reaching peaks of 14%.
At the junction, follow the signs for Rasun / Rasen and Valdaora di Mezzo / Mitterolang, cross a second small wooden bridge to reach an organic farm, and after a short 11% climb, continue on a flat, very pleasant straight stretch through grain fields. At the junction with a left bend, the most demanding part of the return begins: first tackle a distinct 14% incline, then continue along the scenic road at a gentle, steady slope up to the craft zone. After passing a pedestrian underpass, a light climb leads back to the starting point.
Along the trail, there are several benches and a drinking water fountain.
