A walk around Lake Mühlwalder
The Mühlwald Valley is known as the “Valley of Water”, a feature that is ever-present throughout the municipality and to which several family-friendly themed trails have been dedicated. The valley comprises three small mountain villages, several water mills, rushing springs and mountain streams, and captivates visitors with its rustic, unspoilt natural landscape.
At the bottom of the valley, just before Mühlwald, lies the tranquil Mühlwalder See, a small reservoir that can be comfortably circumnavigated in half an hour via a barrier-free circular path. Along the way, numerous rest areas with shaded seating invite you to linger.
Every summer, the traditional Mühlwalder Seefest also takes place by the lake.
Reachability
The Mühlwalder Valley is a small side valley of the Tauferer Ahrntal, stretching right into the heart of the Zillertal Alps. From Brunico, we reach the Mühlwalder Valley, situated to the north, via the Tauferer Valley, where we turn left into the Mühlwalder Valley at Mühlen in Taufers (just before the main town of Sand in Taufers) and park at Lake Mühlwalder (parking is available at the first access road to the lake on the left or behind the lake at the large car park of the Pizzeria Meggima restaurant by the lake).
Lake Mühlwald can also be reached from Bruneck via bus routes 450 and 451 (bus stop at the Hotel am See; the stop is not wheelchair accessible).
Description
The sunny circular walk around the small Lake Mühlwalder is ideal for families with children and older people. The route, which is 0.7 km in total, is entirely flat and tarmac-surfaced, making this leisurely stroll around the small lake accessible even to people with reduced mobility.
Starting from the Meggima car park, we follow the small lakeside promenade on the right-hand side until we reach a wide wooden footbridge that crosses the lake without any steps. Once we reach the other side (a footbridge with a panoramic view), the path takes us back along the pavement on Mühlwalder Straße to our starting point.
