Description

From Merano railway station, we walk along the cycle path through the Europa Allee park to the large roundabout at Mazzini Square (a short section of the path is gravel), where we cross the road twice before turning right onto the busy Rätiastraße. Passing the Church of the Assumption on the left, we reach the Rätiabrücke bridge via the narrow tarmac footpath, where we cross the road to the left (pedestrian crossing with traffic lights, a call button and an audible signal).
From here, we follow the quiet Passer Promenade along the river to the Theatre Bridge and continue along the main Passer Promenade (smooth cobblestones), past the elegant Kurhaus, to the Post Bridge, where the Winter Promenade begins and leads to the Wandelhalle. This section invites you to enjoy a refreshing drink or an ice cream sundae in the sun at one of the many cafés before we reach the Römersteg via the paved Winter Promenade, which winds slightly uphill (a section approx. 25m long with an 8–12% gradient).
Crossing the Römersteg (also known as the ‘Steinerner Steg’), we reach the other, shadier side of the river (the orographic left bank of the Passer), where the cooler summer promenade leads us back to the Postbrücke: First, however, there is a short uphill section (30m with an 8–10% gradient), before the paved path (passing an imposing tree on the right) leads us down to Sissipark with a gentle, continuous gradient of 8% (reaching 18–23% in places).
This final stretch is shaded by historic trees and is the perfect spot to take a break on one of the many park benches. We leave Sissipark behind us and cross the road at the Postbrücke. We then follow the cycle path to Thermenplatz, where we turn right over the Lenoir-Steg back to the main Passer promenade, before taking the same route back to Merano Central Station.
