A walk around Lake Valdurna
This beautiful mountain lake in the upper Sarntal valley is definitely worth a family outing, as the circular walk around Lake Durnholz will delight even children who aren’t keen on walking, thanks to the varied route through woods and meadows.
In summer, the clear lake waters reflect the alpine mountain landscape and the surrounding peaks, whilst in winter, when temperatures are cold and there is little snow, the frozen lake offers fantastic ice-skating.
Reachability
From the A22 Brenner motorway (Bolzano South exit), we drive through Bolzano into the Sarntal valley as far as Durnholz, where we park in the visitor car park below the village at the end of the road open to public traffic. On weekends, there is a charge for parking.
Description
Starting from the visitor car park below Durnholz (1,540 m), we follow the tarmac village road (closed to general traffic and without a pavement), which has a steep gradient of over 15%, up to Lake Durnholz. Crossing a small wooden bridge, we turn left here onto a farm track, also tarmac-surfaced, which leads us almost flat along the lake to the Fischerwirt. There is a viewing platform (access steps) here, offering an unobstructed view of the picturesque mountain lake. From here, the narrow road finally takes us on through lush mountain meadows to the end of the lake, where, after a small wooden bridge, we turn right into the woods to return to our starting point along the opposite lakeshore. This final section of the route through the woods is not suitable for wheelchair users, as the narrow path is too narrow and uneven.
People with manual wheelchairs and a disabled parking permit can park in the few spaces available along the village road below Durnholz and walk from the small wooden bridge along the lake to the Fischerwirt. Alternatively, upon prior request, visitors with a disabled parking permit can also park at the Fischerwirt and walk along the lake.
