A walk on the Seiser Alm
The route winds its way through the rolling hills of the Seiser Alm: this high plateau, covering well over 50 km², is a true paradise for nature lovers and offers countless opportunities for hiking amidst a stunningly beautiful alpine landscape. Three world-famous mountain ranges of the Dolomites – the Langkofel, the Plattkofel and the Schlern – frame the vast alpine pastureland.
Reachability
From Bolzano North, we follow the main road towards the Brenner Pass as far as Blumau, from where a winding regional road leads to Völs and on to Seis am Schlern. A regular shuttle service and a wheelchair-accessible gondola lift take day visitors from Seis am Schlern up to the Seiser Alm (Compatsch), as access to the Seiser Alm by car is restricted (except for guests with disabilities and hotel guests staying on the Seiser Alm).
Description
Starting from Compatsch on the Seiser Alm (1,835 m), past the new wooden St Francis Church, we follow the narrow tarmac road that leads across the Alm towards Saltria. The traffic-calmed road through the Alm area is used by the traditional horse-drawn carriages and sleighs in both summer and winter. Shortly after the Panoramalift inn, we take the pedestrian underpass and, after a gentle climb, reach the Cionstoan natural monument, a huge boulder situated right by the roadside. The walk continues with gentle ups and downs to the wide meadow of the Großes Moos (1,860 m). Near a crossroads, we can decide whether to continue towards Saltria to the nearby Ritsch Schwaige inn or turn left towards Piz. As you continue, after a short descent (9%) you leave the tarmac road and take the unpaved track on the right towards the Sanon Hut. The track leads through beautiful alpine meadows and past a few huts, dominated by the magnificent rock faces of the Langkofel group. At a slope, a path branches off to the left, leading down across the meadows to the alpine pasture: At this point, the path becomes significantly narrower, bumpier and, in places, quite steep. After crossing a few wooden footbridges, we finally reach the nearby Sanon Hut (1,848 m). The hut is open all year round and offers a welcome place to stop for refreshments. The return to Compatsch follows the same route.
