Parish church of St Egid

We are at the foot of the Parish Church of St Egid. This church is important not only for the Catholic community, but is, for residents and visitors alike, a true landmark for finding one’s way around the city. If you want to arrange to meet someone, you simply say: “See you at the parish church.” You can see it from every part of the city: when travelling by car, by bicycle, by public transport or on foot. For friends, family members and tourists alike — it is always nice simply to say, “see you at the parish church”. And of course, you can go inside. Inside, everyone will find what they are looking for. The Fuchskapelle should not be missed, a chapel that can only be visited with a guide. There are also the altars, the magnificent side altars, and an extraordinary organ. And on leaving, every Saturday at 11:45, but only for a few minutes, you can listen to the bell concert. The locals stop. Those who know about it — not everyone does — stop and look up. Even the traffic seems to pause. And everyone listens. Not far away, on the opposite side, we can climb the church tower. The one visible from all over the city. There are 252 steps — I think — and a panoramic platform at a height of 45 metres. From up there, the view stretches in every direction. It is incredible. To the west, the lake and the Kreuzbergl. To the north, the airport. To the east, to the south… everything unfolds before you. It is the perfect place from which to get your bearings, to understand the city. The museum, for example, is clearly visible from there. In the past, however, it had another function: there was a watchman on the tower, keeping watch over the city’s safety. In the event of fire, he raised the alarm. And even today, the bells mark the rhythm of the city. Not only for Mass. I strongly recommend admiring the church from the ground up, having a look inside and, once at the top, looking around and losing yourself on the horizon.
