kärnten.museum

I welcome you to the kärnten.museum. What I particularly appreciate about Klagenfurt is above all this museum, completely redesigned and reopened at the end of 2022. The kärnten.museum, formerly known as the Landesmuseum or Rudolfinum, has a long history. It was built between 1879 and 1884 by the architect Gustav Gugitz and inaugurated in the presence of Crown Prince Rudolf, son of Emperor Franz Joseph. Today it presents itself in an entirely new form. The central theme is change through time: living environments, the origins of humankind. It can be regarded as a universal museum. It is a museum for Carinthia, created by Carinthians, telling the story of Carinthia through its history and culture. If you want to explore the history of the region in greater depth, you can visit the museum on the first and second floors, where you can follow the evolution of landscapes, discover possible perspectives for the future and understand how local people can actively participate in this process. They can help shape it; they can take part in workshops, lectures and events. It is a place that is open to everyone, where the history, culture and nature of Carinthia meet. This is what gives the kärnten.museum its inner vitality. The building itself is also worth admiring from the outside: it is an example of late historicism, situated at the south-eastern corner of the historic centre. It stands between the seat of the regional government, the Chamber of Agriculture and the Konzerthaus. It stands in a setting rich in history and tradition. The kärnten.museum is the regional museum, the heart of Carinthia: it tells of past centuries and looks towards those to come. It is everything that Carinthia is — culture, nature, identity — brought together in a single place.
