Regional Diet Building, or Landahaus
We have already mentioned that the Landhaus was built at the end of the sixteenth century, between 1574 and 1594. It is an imposing building, with a horseshoe-shaped layout, almost like a noble palace. But before it, there were two older buildings, two castles. The first, of which some documentary evidence survives, dates back to the thirteenth century. The second was built in the fifteenth century. Both were probably located in the area of Alter Platz, or in any case on the site where the Landhaus stands today. So, before the present building, these two structures once stood there, about which, unfortunately, very little is known today. In 2019 the courtyard of the Landhaus was completely renovated. Before the renovation works, archaeological excavations were carried out and it was then that substantial foundations were uncovered. They are thought to have belonged to one of the two castles, physical traces of what had stood there before. They were probably located at the western end of Alter Platz, right where history continues to resurface.
